Rolls-Royce Seeks to Join Development of India's AMCA Fighter Jet Engines
Rolls-Royce has announced its intention to partner with Reliance Industries Limited to develop engines for India's AMCA fighter jet

The British company Rolls-Royce has expressed its interest in joining the development of the engines for India's Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program. This move is part of the Indian Air Force's efforts to develop a fifth-generation fighter jet with indigenous design.
## Background The Indian government has been prioritizing the involvement of local industry in its modernization projects, aiming to reduce dependence on foreign companies and promote domestic players as future global competitors. This approach is not limited to the aerospace sector, as evident from the upcoming purchase of six submarines from the German company TKMS, which has partnered with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders for local construction.
## Partnership with Reliance Industries Rolls-Royce has partnered with Reliance Industries Limited, based in Mumbai, to potentially design, develop, and manufacture the new propulsion systems for the AMCA fighter jet. Anant Ambani, director of Reliance Industries Limited, stated that the goal is to combine Rolls-Royce's expertise in advanced propulsion with Reliance's technology, manufacturing capabilities, and execution skills to build a domestic ecosystem for aeronautical engines in India.
## Development of the AMCA Fighter Jet The recent development comes as the Indian government is evaluating a proposal from the French company Safran, which has partnered with the Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) to meet the requirements of involving local players. According to reports, the first units of the fifth-generation fighter jet are expected to be equipped with GE F414 engines of US origin, which have already been selected for India's LCA Tejas Mk2 fighter jets. However, the same supplier has faced issues in delivering its F404 engines for the Tejas Mk1 variant on time.
## Future Prospects The partnership between Rolls-Royce and Reliance Industries aims to create a new advanced complex for the development of gas turbines, which could potentially become a broader center for propulsion technologies in the future. The facility is expected to have an integrated capacity for engine production, from design to testing and maintenance throughout their lifespan. As the Indian government decides on the final proposal, the collaboration between Rolls-Royce and Reliance Industries could play a significant role in the development of the AMCA fighter jet's engines.
