Romanian F-16s Intercept Suspected Russian Naval Drone Near Key Gas Platform
Romanian F-16 fighter jets intercepted a suspected Russian naval drone near the country's main gas platform in the Black Sea

Romanian F-16 fighter jets were scrambled in the early hours of the morning to investigate a maritime drone sighting in the country's Exclusive Economic Zone. The drone was identified near the Neptun Alpha gas production platform, located in the Black Sea, approximately 80 nautical miles away. One of the Romanian F-16s fired at the drone with its onboard cannon, and the unit was subsequently neutralized by military personnel.
The presence of the maritime drone was reported by a commercial vessel at around 06:28 on August 20, according to a press release from the Romanian Ministry of National Defense. The ministry also stated that a Coast Guard vessel, carrying an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team from the Romanian Naval Forces, was heading to the location to conduct inspections. The press release confirmed that one of the Romanian Air Force's combat aircraft fired at the target with its onboard cannon, successfully hitting the maritime drone.
The Romanian Ministry of Defense later shared updated information on the deployment, describing it as a single maritime system equipped with an explosive charge. The drone was hit by the cannon of an F-16 but not completely destroyed. Military personnel on board the vessel then neutralized the drone in a safe manner, confirming that it was carrying an explosive charge.
Incident Details
The Romanian Ministry of Defense has not confirmed the origin of the maritime drone. However, Romanian President Nicușor Dan referred to the deployment of F-16s and the Coast Guard, stating that the priority was to protect the lives of people working on the platform and maintain critical infrastructure out of harm's way. He also condemned the intensification of such irresponsible incidents by the Russian Federation.
Energy Security Implications
The maritime drone was spotted near the Neptun Alpha platform, part of Romania's Neptun Deep natural gas project. This project is one of the most significant energy deposits in the European Union, with production expected to start in 2027, increasing Romania's gas production and net export capacity. The project is crucial for contributing to the country's and the EU's energy security, especially in the context of dependence on energy imports.
NATO Presence in the Region
In the context of the Transatlantic Alliance, allied forces have increased their operational alert sorties in the eastern region of NATO by over 250%, citing the main reason as the increase in aerial activity by Russian Armed Forces near allied airspace. Recently, on August 16, an unmanned aerial vehicle was shot down by Spanish F-18M Hornet fighter jets after entering Romanian airspace. The Spanish Tactical Air Detachment Paznic began its deployment in Romanian territory at the end of July as part of NATO's Reinforced Air Policing mission in Romania.
