The Belgian Air Force has achieved a significant milestone in its F-35 programme with the first launch of a guided bomb from one of its new fighter jets. Two instructor pilots from the Belgian F-35 Conversion Unit, part of the 312th Squadron, conducted the exercise at the Luke Air Force Base in Arizona. The successful launch of the GBU-12 bomb marks an important step in the training and certification of Belgian pilots to operate the new F-35 fleet.

Background

The Belgian Air Force is currently transitioning from its F-16 fleet to the new F-35 fighter jets. As part of this process, the air force has been rotating personnel to the United States to accelerate the transition and increase the number of trained crews. The first F-35A jets arrived in Belgium in October, and the air force has been working to modernize its infrastructure to support the new aircraft.

Capabilities Expansion

The expansion of the Belgian Air Force's combat capabilities has also been accompanied by the acquisition of new armament. The US has authorized the possible sale of AGM-184 JSM cruise missiles, valued at $236 million, and the air force is also planning to acquire AIM-9X Sidewinder missiles, guided munitions, and GBU-53/B Small Diameter Bomb II bombs. The launch of the GBU-12 bomb represents another step in the training of Belgian pilots to operate the growing range of armament destined for the F-35A.

Industrial Participation

In addition to expanding its combat capabilities, Belgium is also seeking to increase its industrial participation in the F-35 programme. A new production line for F-35 horizontal stabilizers was inaugurated in June, developed by the BeLightning joint venture between Sonaca, ASCO, and SABCA. The production line will manufacture components for the F-35, with Sonaca responsible for assembly and Lockheed Martin providing collaboration.

Programme Expansion

The Belgian F-35 programme has undergone significant expansion since the original order for 34 aircraft was placed in 2018. In July 2025, the Belgian government confirmed the acquisition of 11 additional F-35s, bringing the total number of aircraft to 45. The expanded fleet will enable the air force to replace its F-16s and gradually introduce the F-35 into service at its bases in Florennes and Kleine-Brogel.
