The Peruvian Navy is set to receive its second modernized submarine, the BAP Antofagasta, after a series of complex upgrades at the SIMA Perú shipyard.

The BAP Antofagasta is the second of four U-209/1200-class submarines to undergo modernization, with the German company ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) providing technical assistance. The ship has undergone significant repairs and upgrades, including the installation of a modern flank sonar system.

The modernization process has been ongoing for several years, with the first submarine, the BAP Chipana, demonstrating its capabilities during the multinational exercise RIMPAC 2026. The BAP Chipana is expected to remain operational for another 15 years, on average.

The BAP Antofagasta is set to be followed by the BAP Angamos, which is currently ready to enter the shipyard's hangar for its own modernization process.
