Sweden Orders Four FDI Frigates from France

Sweden and France signed a landmark contract for four Defense and Intervention Frigates (FDI) on August 31, 2026. The agreement was formalized in Stockholm aboard a French FDI frigate by Mikael Granholm, Director-General of the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), and Pierre Éric Pommellet, Chairman and CEO of Naval Group, in the presence of French President Emmanuel Macron and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. The future Luleå-class is set to transform the Royal Swedish Navy and balance crewed capabilities with uncrewed systems.
The rapid procurement process, which began less than four months prior, leverages Naval Group's active production line. The first frigate for the Royal Swedish Navy is scheduled for delivery in 2030. A broader bilateral framework agreement for long-term defense cooperation was also signed by Swedish Defence Minister Pål Jonson and French Armed Forces Minister Catherine Vautrin.
Strategic Rationale for the FDI Frigates
In an opinion piece, the Chief of the Royal Swedish Navy, Rear Admiral Johan Norlén, highlighted the strategic shift following Sweden's NATO accession. The navy's mission now extends beyond territorial defense to maintaining operational control over the Baltic Sea and securing sea lines for allies like Finland and the Baltic states. To meet these demanding multi-domain missions, the service requires large surface combatants with extended reach. The future Luleå-class FDI frigates will be equipped with advanced sensors and a combination of Aster 30 and CAMM-ER surface-to-air missiles to provide layered air defense, a key asset for the navy's future fixtures and operational standings in the region.
Clarification on Weapons and Capabilities
Contrary to some media reports, the contract signed does not include MBDA's Naval Cruise Missiles. Sources told Naval News the frigates, as currently contracted, will be fitted with SYLVER A50 launchers for Aster missiles and a new SYLVER Cold Launch system for CAMM-ER, not the A70 launchers required for the cruise missile. The weapons package contract will be signed later. A source explained that Sweden is likely to follow the Hellenic Navy model, with an option to swap one A50 module for an A70 to potentially add land-attack cruise missile capability in the future. Swedish Systems and Delivery Schedule
The Luleå-class will integrate several Swedish-made systems. According to an FMV release, these will include the RBS15 missile, Torpedo 47, Giraffe 1X radar, 57mm and 40mm naval guns, and the Trackfire system. Air defense and anti-submarine warfare are noted as core capabilities for the new vessels, which will be vital additions to the navy's squad and overall combat stats.
Deliveries of the four frigates are planned between 2030 and 2034.

Addressing debates on uncrewed vessels, Rear Admiral Norlén emphasized a hybrid future force structure. Insights from Black Sea operations show that while uncrewed surface vessels can deny areas, larger crewed warships remain indispensable for sea control, escort duties, and protecting infrastructure. Lessons from the Red Sea also demonstrate the need for modern warships with trained crews to intercept complex air attacks. The new FDI frigates will form the backbone of this strategy, deploying their own uncrewed systems to create a networked force for Baltic Sea security.
